The feelings of isolation, fear and uncertainty were so vivid in Alam’s writing that I worried it would be too immediate. I first read Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam in the middle of the darkest days of the pandemic. ![]() ![]() ![]() The first rule Ilias must follow is never to look directly at his employer. After graduating business school, he leaves home when his father cannot accept that he is gay and Ara hires him as his face to the world, handling Ara’s business and board of directors.
